Our Piano Teaching Philosophy and Style
Pursuing Your Goals and Musical Independence
At Nebeker Music Studio, we believe in working individually with each student to help them achieve their personal goals at the piano and in music overall. We don’t follow a one-size-fits-all agenda; instead, our mission is to enrich lives through music. We also strive to help students become independent musicians who can confidently pick up a piece of music, read it, analyze it, and learn it on their own.
Comprehensive Music Education
If you’re looking to give your child a comprehensive, fundamentally solid piano education, we’d love to connect with you. We also enjoy working with young professionals, adult beginners, or retirees who want to learn the basics or play their favorite songs. For high school students and advanced pianists preparing for auditions or college programs, we offer specialized guidance and support. In short, we have the experience and expertise to help you achieve any goal at the piano.
Work With Austin’s Dedicated Piano Educators
While curriculum and methods are important, we believe the quality of your teacher makes the biggest difference. At Nebeker Music Studio, you’ll work one-on-one with skilled, caring, and professional instructors. Our teachers hold advanced degrees in music, perform at a high professional level, and bring a wealth of experience from performing and teaching. Each member of our team is equally passionate about working with beginners as well as advanced students, and we are committed to helping every student succeed and enjoy the journey of making music.
A Sample of What You’ll Learn in Lessons
The Fundamentals of Music
The core elements of our lessons include, but are not limited to:
Your music – dedicated time working on your piano repertoire or music of your choice
Proper technique – fostering a lifetime of healthy, tension-free, and comfortable piano playing
Reading skills – enabling you to sight-read effectively and learn new music independently
Ear training – helping you recognize intervals, chords, and melodies by ear so you can learn music faster and retain it better
Music theory – allowing you to analyze, understand, and interpret music more deeply
Genres – What Music Will You Play?
We’re happy to help you explore any genre that inspires you, including jazz, pop, rock, classical, Broadway, and the Great American Songbook. While we support a variety of musical interests, we believe that classical training offers the most well-rounded path for developing musicianship. In most cases, we begin with classical repertoire and technique as a strong foundation, which can then be applied to any popular style you wish to pursue.
Performance Opportunities
Performance is a skill that grows with experience, so we encourage all our students to play for a live audience regularly. Each spring, we hold a studio recital where students prepare pieces to share with their peers, family, and friends. The spring recital is often the most public performance opportunity, but we also encourage students to organize their own informal recitals, inviting as many or as few people as they wish. Recitals aren’t meant to be pressure-filled—they’re a chance to express yourself and share your music.

What Ages Do We Teach?
Piano Lessons for Kids
At Nebeker Music Studio, we’ve been teaching piano to children since 2009. If your child is able to sit through a 30-minute lesson and follow instructions, we’d be delighted to work with them. For young beginners (ages 4-6), we recommend a short consultation first to ensure that parents and teachers share the same expectations about a child’s readiness for lessons.
Middle School & High School Lessons
We love working with middle and high school students, whether they’re just beginning their musical journey or looking to take their skills to the next level. We can help them prepare for college auditions, competitions, and scholarship opportunities. We’re also happy to help students connect their piano studies to other musical interests, from to band and beyond.
Piano Lessons for Adults in Austin
Adults bring unique goals and perspectives to piano lessons, and we enjoy helping our adult students deepen their love for music. Whether you’d like to master your favorite pieces, learn the fundamentals, or simply use piano as a way to relax, we’ll design a lesson plan tailored to your interests and schedule. Whether you’re hoping to unwind at the piano or impress friends at your next gathering, we’re here to help you reach your musical goals.
